The latest round of the ever elusive Middle East peace talk appears to be headed in the same direction as all the previous ones.
Palestinian authorities and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas are threatening to walk out of the negotiations with Israel if the Jewish settlements are not halted. On the Israeli side, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Jewish settlements should be part of the negotiations but not a pre-requisite.
The White House is scrambling in its attempt to keep the efforts going, but the special envoy George Mitchell and Sec. of State Clinton are not having much success, or hope, to achieve a solution to the impasse. And they are pressed by time as all indications are that the Palestinians will pull out of the talks during the upcoming Arab League meeting in Libya.
It looks like the Palestinians are still using plays from the Yassir Arafat game book, going through the motion of initiating negotiations only to pull away blaming Israel.
Netanyahu had halted the Jewish settlements over 10 months ago, but the moratorium on them expired last month and limited construction has already been taking place.
The part of all this that brings back fond memories of the Nobel Peace price recipient Arafat is that the Palestinians go through the pomp and circumstance of official peace talks only to reject them shortly after. Arafat was really good at it, prancing around the White House, shaking hands only to return to Palestine and reject any form of negotiation with Israel.
Also interesting, the halt of Jewish settlements took place over ten months ago, but the Palestinian authorities waited nine of those months before agreeing to any negotiation, knowing very well that the shortness of time was going to play in their favor.
The truth of the matter is that there is no honest intension on the part of Abbas and his cohorts to achieve any form of peace with Israel. And the reason is that any kind of compromise with Israel would diminish the political and financial support that the Palestinian leadership receives from the United Nations, not to mention the stronghold that the Palestinian leadership has over its own people.
Lest they loose control of the ignorant masses, Abbas and his so-called government must continue to keep the Palestinian people in a state of victimization that insures maintenance of authority.
It is not much different than the actions that Obama, Al Sharpton and Jessi Jackson conduct with the black population in America.
Palestinian leadership has been banking on the propaganda done by many who have found any possible reason to paint the state of Israel as the only offending entity in the controversy. From the United Nations to all the Arab nations, a continuous anti-Semitic message has been divulged across the globe, playing perfectly in the hands of those who are slated to profit from the blood of others.
How else would someone like Arafat would succeed in accumulate such a financial fortune has he had when he finally got to meet his virgins?
The White House has requested Israel would extend the moratorium on settlements for another month (where were they for the first nine months of the moratorium?) but PM Netanyahu does not seem inclined to oblige.
So it looks like that yet another Middle East Peace attempt is destined to join all the others on the scrap heap of history, unless Israel will decide to give in again. The question remains if Netanyahu will agree to place his nation in jeopardy for the sake of Obama’s legacy.
I am not counting on it.
Just my thoughts!
