In a news conference held on his own turf of Harlem, Rep. Charlie Rangel has asked his constituency to give him time to address the ‘allegations’ of unethical behavior that the House Ethics Committee has leveled against him.
Of course these ‘allegations’ have been known to just about everyone in America, and just everyone also knows that Mr. Rangel has been very ‘active’ in procuring a very good life for himself, thanks to his devotion to the cause of the poor and the downtrodden. Of course what the ‘abused’ that keep on electing him do not want to realize is that his goal has always been to keep them in a continuous state of oppression so to gain their votes.
The NY Times reporting about the press conference states:
Mr. Rangel, 80, appeared on his political home turf one day after a House investigative panel announced that he would face a public ethics trial over findings that he had violated a range of ethics rules. While the panel did not disclose details of those violations, officials with knowledge of the investigation have said that they involve Mr. Rangel’s acceptance of four rent-stabilized apartments in Manhattan and efforts by his office to preserve a half-billion-dollar tax break for an oil executive who pledged a donation for an educational center being built in Mr. Rangel’s honor.
So it appears that Mr. Rangel was wetting his whistle with the rent business in Manhattan and that he was playing with one of those hated oil company executives, not to mention not paying taxes on some vacation home somewhere in the Bahamas or something like that. But of course the good Rangel will surely have a good explanation about his financial escapades, most likely explanations based on his fight against the greed of some big corporation, Republicans, TEA Party and/or George Bush.
And his constituency will take that and most likely re-elect the man.
Mr. Rangel is asking for time. I am willing to give it to him. I know I will be labeled as lenient and softy, but, considering his age, how about 10 years in state penitentiary.
Just my thoughts!
